Victim Witness Assistance Program

If you are a victim of a crime, we are here to help you. Virginia law gives victims and witnesses certain rights and we can help you understand your rights and know where to go for assistance.

Our Department Can:

  • Explain what to expect in court
  • Keep you updated about your court case
  • Go with you to court hearings
  • Tell you about protection available to you
  • Refer you for help with:
    •  Medical bills and other out-of-pocket losses
    •  Counseling
    •  Support groups
    •  Food and shelter
    •  Medical/dental care

The New Kent Victim Witness Assistance Program is located in the New Kent Commonwealth's Attorney's Office in the New Kent County Courthouse. The current director of our program is Karen Mortensen.
