Pet Preparedness
Pets are a part of our families and rely on us to make sure they are safe and cared for, every day in all conditions, but especially in emergencies. Having an emergency plan and emergency kit for your pet is an important part of being a responsible pet owner.
Our pets’ needs are much like our own:
- Food, including snacks, water and dishes;
- Medications and first aid supplies;
- A blanket, favorite toy, perhaps a pillow;
- Sanitation supplies - kitty litter and litter trays, waste bags, wipes and paper towel for clean-ups.
Our pets also need:
- License tags and proof of required shots. These are required if you need to go to a public shelter;
- Have your pet microchipped and keep the number of your vet handy;
- Picture ID to prove they are yours if they become lost or separated (take a selfie of you and your pet!);
- Well-fitting collars, harnesses, leashes, muzzles;
- A pet carrier or crate to keep your pet safe if you must evacuate. Your pet will be calmer, safer, and much less likely to get lost or run away.
Remember:
- IF YOU PLAN TO GO TO A PUBLIC SHELTER, CHECK IN ADVANCE TO SEE IF PETS ARE ALLOWED.
- NEVER LEAVE YOUR PET IN A VEHICLE OR OUTSIDE DURING A WEATHER EMERGENCY!
- DO YOUR BEST TO KEEP THEM CALM IF THEY BECOME FRIGHTENED.
