Water irrigation tips from NK UtilitiesIt’s hot, and water consumption is up! Whether they are a Public Utilities customer or not, all New Kent residents share the same groundwater resources for their potable water. Below are few simple tips to minimize irrigation use and cost: - Utilize a rain gauge to calibrate your irrigation system to approximately 1 inch per week
- Water around sunrise or sunset to minimize evaporation
- Rotate irrigation zones so every zone doesn’t run every day
- Check your rain sensor or soil moisture indicator to ensure that they are adjusted, connected and working properly
- Utilize drip irrigation in flower beds
- Walk your lawn after watering to inspect for obvious ponding, excessive runoff, and other problem areas
- Utilize the free resources of Virginia Cooperative Extension for advice on drought tolerant landscaping, summer and fall lawn care, and much more
- Consult an irrigation professional to optimize the use of your irrigation syste
