1. How close can I build a fence or have my driveway to the property line?

Fences and driveways are allowed to go directly on the property line. In residential zoning, fences can be no higher that 4 feet in the front and 6 feet on the side and rear property lines with the finished side facing adjacent property owners.

2. Can I put a trailer or a second home on my property?

No, you can only have one dwelling per parcel.

3. How much land do I have to have to have horses?

There is no restriction to how much land you need in A-1, however, in, single-family residential R-O, R-OA, R-1 and R-1A zoning, you must have three acres of useable acreage for the first horse and then two for each additional horse with a maximum of ten horses.

4. How many acres do I need to build a house?

There is no set amount of acreage to build a house in New Kent County on Agricultural (A-1) zoned property. If you can meet your setbacks and have room for a well and a septic system you can build!

5. Can I have chickens or other farm animals?

Chickens and other farm animals/live stock (excluding horses) are only allowed in A-1 zoning.
